In Canada, a customs broker plays a crucial role in facilitating the smooth import and export of goods by handling the necessary paperwork and compliance requirements on behalf of a business.

Here at Jori Logistics, we take our clients’ commercial information on imports coming into Canada, vet that information and report it to Canada customs so that goods can enter into Canada. Our focus also extends to ensuring the ongoing compliance of our customers, guaranteeing their long-term success in international trade.

As a customs broker, our process begins with receiving information from the shipper. This includes a commercial invoice containing details such as the product being shipped, buyer and seller information, value, and country of origin. Additionally, we receive a cargo control document from the transportation line. We then input this information into our system, carefully review and verify it, and ask any necessary questions to ensure accuracy. Once this process is complete, we submit the declaration to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) on behalf of our clients.

Several factors can contribute to customs clearance delays or extra fees:

  1. Late Customs Clearance or Documentation: Delays can occur if there are errors or delays in customs clearance or if the required documentation is submitted late.
  2. Invalid Customs Declaration: Customs declarations with incorrect or missing information, incomplete paperwork, missing paperwork, or errors by customs brokers can lead to rejection by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).
  3. E-Manifest Issues: Incomplete or late filing of e-manifests by transportation providers can cause delays in the border clearance process.
  4. Inspections: Border inspections by CBSA can slow down the clearance process, and there may be associated fees charged by customs for conducting inspections.

It’s important to address these potential causes of delays or fees to ensure smooth and efficient customs clearance.

Border inspections can be triggered by various factors, including:

  1. New Importer: If you are a new importer without an established track record, you may be more likely to undergo inspection as a precautionary measure.
  2. Risky Importer Profile: Importers with a history of inaccurate customs clearances or non-compliance may be flagged for inspections due to their higher risk profile.
  3. Risky Supplier Profile: Importing goods from suppliers with a history of non-compliance or involvement in illicit activities can increase the likelihood of a customs inspection.
  4. Random Selection: Customs authorities may conduct random inspections as part of their routine procedures to ensure compliance and detect any irregularities.
  5. Commodity-Specific Targeting: The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) may target specific commodities for inspection based on intelligence or risk assessment, particularly if there are concerns about illegal or fraudulent activities related to those goods.
